Dirt

The Erustiaan carried Dev through at least half a dozen corridors, still keeping him suspended and away from his body as he did. Dev could only imagine what it looked like to anyone they passed, though the corridors only grew darker and dingier as they went along. Finally, they reached a row of small cells and he set Dev down. Having paid attention the entire way here, Dev had built a map in his mind about how to get back out. All he needed to do was get away from this guy and find a ship or a shuttle and either stow away or barter his way on board with service. But escaping from an Erustiaan wouldn’t be easy. He’d have to be clever about it. Dev had been waiting for just an opportunity to be alone with the man.

Without making any sudden movements, he formed his hand into a blade, just like he had back in that bar on Loeria. He turned and punched forward, catching the Erustiaan right under his ribcage. Unlike the man on Loeria, this one felt it immediately, and sputtered, grabbing his side. He swiped for Dev, but missed, throwing him off balance as he crashed to the ground. Dev couldn’t let this man follow him. He struck him four more times, each in equally harsh places until the Erustiaan’s face was red with pain and he screamed out. There was no point in hitting him in the face, their skull structures were at least twice as dense as humans and he would more than likely break his hand rather than shut the man up. Dev glanced back the way he’d come and took off running, the Erustiaan howling in pain behind him. He sped down the corridor, keeping a sharp eye for anyone who might try to stop him. He needed to get back out to the main ring of the station without going back through Grismatch’s quarters.

An alarm sounded above his head, bathing the hallway in reddish-orange. Dev bared his teeth. There had to be a way out of here. But before he could decide which way to run, two more guards appeared from each end of the corridor, bearing down on him. One Erustiaan he could catch off-guard, two…definitely not. He’d more than likely get his head caved in.

Dev turned the opposite way and ran back by the man he’d injured, lying on his side, yelling in his native tongue. It was strange to hear a yell in whisper-speak, but somehow it reached Dev’s ears.

A white-hot pain exploded across his shoulder, causing Dev to stumble and fall, skidding across the ground. Another explosion hit him in the leg, causing him to reel back in pain. The two Erustiaans appeared in his vision, standing over him with weapons raised. One of them tapped the device on his neck. “This could have been easy for you. Too bad.” He made a slight adjustment to the weapon, then shot Dev dead center in the chest.
